What it teaches


Dawkins's contribution was a change of viewpoint rather than a new mechanism. If selection is read at the level of the gene, behaviour that looks puzzling from the organism's perspective becomes legible: an animal sacrificing itself for relatives is advancing copies of its own genes held in those relatives, which is why the arithmetic of relatedness predicts who helps whom. From there the book becomes a study in strategy. Borrowing game theory, he introduces the evolutionarily stable strategy — a pattern of behaviour that, once common in a population, cannot be displaced by any rival strategy, which is a Nash equilibrium arrived at by natural selection rather than by reasoning. He shows why cooperation is stable in repeated encounters but not in single ones, and why predator and prey can improve endlessly while neither gains ground on the other. The final chapter proposes that ideas replicate and compete by the same logic and coins a word for them. Combative in places and contested at the time, it remains the clearest statement of the gene's-eye view.
